8th grade Health
Instructor: Luke Goyette
8th Grade Health Education is a thirty-day (every other day) course that allows students the opportunity to learn in greater detail about 3 units.  The first unit is Nutrition and Body Image. To begin, students learn about the essential nutrients, their caloric values, recommended amounts and examples of foods that provide these nutrients.  Comparisons will then be made between Essential Nutrients and the new food pyramid (MyPyrmid), and finally students will complete a comparison and analysis of the percentages of 1 meal vs the recommended daily amount using the Essential Nutrients model.  In addition, students will have opportunities to learn how to read food labels, discus body image, and the importance of how serious changes in nutrition are and how these changes can make dramatic changes to lifestyle.
The second unit is Alcohol, Tobacco, and Other Drugs provides opportunities to learn about drug classifications, the effects of different drug classifications on the body, and specific examples of drugs along with the slang names.  During this unit classes will have the opportunity to discuss the choices individuals have and where the decisions to these choices will determine what path individuals will lean towards.
The final unit is Maintaining Healthy Relationships. During the Relationships unit students will see and understand the major benefits to abstinence while being introduced to the reproductive systems, sexually transmitted infections, protection methods, decision making skills, dating communication, and refusal skills.
